Phonics | Overview

We recognise that early reading skills for the majority of pupils are imbedded through phonic knowledge and the ability to decode. Therefore, pupils from Nursery to Year Two, have up to 1 hour per day designated to structured whole class phonics lessons.

Every member of teaching staff, has received high quality phonics training (Phase One-Phase Six). We follow the systematic synthetic phonics evidence based phonics scheme “Phonics Bug” (Pearson Education), adapted to meet the needs and requirements of the pupils at Mayflower, with a specific focus on embedding phonetic learning and knowledge through cognitive science methods.

Any pupil in EYFS through to Year 6, who is struggling to decode, segment and blend, will be offered small group or 1-1 phonics interventions, with urgency. Phonics Bug will be the programme used throughout the Academy.

Staff Training

All of our staff are trained to teach phonics. We have invested heavily in making sure pupils are taught to read - and to the highest standards. Here is a short video of the most recently qualified staff. We are really proud of our team and how they always search for ways to become more knowledgeable.
