Mrs Murals
Podcast | Wall Artsit | Mrs Murals
Intro: Hi, Mrs Murals, we are very pleased to meet you and to chat with you today. We can't wait to learn more about how you spread your colourful art around Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Thank you for giving us your time. You are the first mural artist that we have made a podcast with and that's super exciting. We can see from your website that you have a cool sense of humour. You have already made us smile. How are you today?
Q1: On your website there is a video of you painting Plympton Library. It is a favourite of mine and makes me want to visit the library to see your work. What was the inspiration behind this artwork, and what were the main techniques that were used to create it?
Q2: We have been studying art in class, and a fine art teacher (Richard) told us that there are 6 parts to art. These are: 1. Line 2. Shape and Form 3. Movement 4. Space and Spacialness 5. Tone 6. Colour. You studied Fine Art - how would you define art and do you use these 6 parts to influence how you draw and paint?
Q3: I draw on lots of things. My grandad made me a desk and painted it white. And within two minutes of receiving it, I had drawn characters all over it. What do you think of this and would this be something that you found yourself doing when you plan your drawings on walls? My Dad is fine with this. My Mum says that I should not do this and draw on paper.
Q4: You are inspiring us with your murals. What made you move toward painting on walls? How do you move from paper to someone's wall? You would need permission - how does this happen?
Q5: How would you describe your artistic style?
Q6: We know that you often paint a wall under comission. Do you have to follow people's instructions, and how do your values influence which jobs you take on and which ones you let go? How do you let your own dreams come to life when working for someone else?
Q7: My Teacher, Miss Extence, says that she knows you and youv'e inspired her. She says that you have a lion in your house and that you do what you do to make people happy and get to know local people. You have made us happy - your website is brill. What top tips do you have for us in staying happy when we do our work and learn new things?
Q8: We have learnt that you used to paint subways. Many people can see your murals as they walk to their next destination, maybe on their way to school or work. Perhaps your work will cheer people up on a grey day. How does it feel to know that your work can have this effect on people?
Q9: I watched a video where you were painting using some scaffolding to get up high. Are you comfortable painting at high levels and what steps do you take to create a project?
Q10: Mrs. Murals, I am learning lots today. In class, we are learning to select and organise our learning into books and even online. How do you select the pieces that you then share on Instagram for the world to see?
Q11: As an artist - who are your favourite inspirations, and who is making you think differently right now?
Q12: We have been listening to many artists. Some use paint. Some use a pencil. Some use other forms of expressing themselves - even sculpture or material. In class I have been learning how to do things like cross-hatching and line drawing. I have also been learning how to mix and use colour with paints> I have been wondering whether to be an artist you need to be able to draw with pencil and then learn to paint or just move straight into painting with a brush? Do you draw with a pencil and then use a brush or just straight into the brush?
Outro: Mrs Murals - we have loved meeting you today. Your work will be seen by so many people every day. Perhaps your work is viewed more by Plymouth people than any other work by an artist? That is so powerful to think about and so is that you have given your time with us today. We would like to say thank you for this. You are so busy. We would love to make a mural with you. We might need some help to figure out how we could work with you. We hope that you have a lovely day, and please remember us, because, Together we can...
