Staff, pupils and parents are invited to become fully engaged in Plymouth's Black History Month. DBI have linked with our team to deliver events which are aimed at being both educational and social. Follow below to see what we have got up to, and please feel free to join in.
This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Narratives,” marks an important shift in recognizing and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. By focusing on this theme, we bring light to untold stories, challenge historical inaccuracies, and celebrate the complexity of Black heritage.
Why Reclaiming Narratives?
Honour Our Heroes: Address overlooked contributions of Black individuals both in the UK and globally.
Embrace Our Stories: Reclaim the diverse and impactful stories of Black individuals across various fields.
Empower and Educate: Let’s uplift and educate each other by embracing the narratives that shape our collective identity.
Event Highlights
Food & Heritage (Tuesdays): Explore the rich culinary traditions of African, Caribbean, and BAME communities through tastings and storytelling.
Health & Wellbeing (Wednesdays, 6pm – 7pm at Revolution): Dedicated sessions for physical and mental wellbeing to promote holistic health within the community.
Health Is Wealth (Thursdays): Engage with health professionals on key topics like mental health and nutrition, followed by Club Kombat fitness sessions.
Storytelling & Mixed Heritage (Saturdays): Celebrate Black and mixed heritage through storytelling and folklore, with local vendors selling cultural goods.
Final Celebration at The Box (Last Saturday): Join us for keynote talks, panel discussions, and a Bazaar showcasing cultural food and crafts.
Please note, Health Is Wealth events (part of Belong In Plymouth) will run each Thursday in October. This month’s Health Is Wealth event is happening this Thursday, 2pm – 6pm at Jabulani.
