What is Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and academies with pupils between Foundation Stage 2 and Year 11, on roll in January of each year, that are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years (so-called Ever 6 Pupils) or who are looked after by the Local Authority. The grant for Mayflower Community Academy is detailed within our annual Pupil Premium Strategy (click here). Schools have the freedom to spend the Premium, which is additional to their underlying budget, in a way they think will best support raising the achievement of funded pupils in comparison with their Pupil Premium and non-Pupil Premium peers within the school and nationally, whatever their academic starting point and potential.

Mayflower Community Academy’s Waves of Engagement model plots the progressive range of deliberate actions that the Academy takes to improve life chances by facilitating learning throughout its community. The 5 Waves are a holistic measure that go beyond the ordinary ‘improving outcomes’ goals of most schools. They offer a form of moral compass by which the Academy can measure its effectiveness and impact. The outcomes of these measures can then be used to target resources and unlock the talents and interests of the community.
The waves of engagement demonstrate that the Academy promotes learning as a life-long inclusive process, which thrives most when viewed as a partnership between staff, parents, carers, pupils, cross-industry partners and expert agencies. Each partner is viewed as having an equal weight in how they influence and enable learning for pupils and their families. Each 'wave' of engagement requires considerable attention both within its longer-term operation plans as well as daily and deliberate actions. All partners are encouraged to 100% sign up as well as stepping up to improving the life chances of pupils and their families. Pupil Premium is our collective responsibility to address.
The Academy therefore links with cross industry partners to enhance their offer by attracting energy, interest and income into the community, which in turn generates increased access to 1) time 2) space 3) resources 4) expertise for learning to thrive.
Mayflower’s 5 Waves of Engagement are 1) Early family engagement with learning 2) Attendance at school 3) Engagement in learning and widening experiences 4) Accelerating progress and deepening understanding 5) Enabling others.
These 5 Waves are evaluated against 4 main strands:
- Effective teaching, learning and assessment
- Effective research informed intervention
- Curriculum design and development
- Developing the talents and interests of pupils and their families
They also cross-referenced with the Education Endowment Foundation's (EEF) 3-tiered approach to organising Pupil Premium spend:
1) Teaching 2) Targeted Academic Intervention 3) Wider Strategies.
