Year 6 Leavers Assembly: Full of Unforgettable Moments

This year, the Year 6 Leavers Assembly took on a new twist, yet it retained its timeless magic and charm. One of the highlights of the event was the much-anticipated year group song performance by the Year 6 students. Over the past few weeks, we had been meticulously working on an arrangement of Pink’s "Cover Me in Sunshine." As a cohort, we unanimously agreed that this song perfectly encapsulated the joyous spirit of the children. Its familiarity also made it accessible to those less confident in their singing abilities.

The venue for this special event was none other than The Market Hall in Devonport. With its grand high ceilings and expansive open space, it was an ideal location for choral singing. The stage was magnificently set upon the grand staircase in the middle of the hall, adding a touch of elegance to the entire event. What a venue it was!

The evening commenced with senior members of the MCA Earlybirds delivering sensational renditions of "When She Loved Me" and "Somewhere Only We Know." Both performances were met with thunderous applause from the staff, family, and fellow students. It was, without doubt, one of their most confident performances to date. The growth and improvement in these pieces were simply astounding.

Following several awards and heartwarming anecdotes, it was finally time for the Year 6 children to shine. Our rehearsals had gone exceptionally well, and we were confident that the children would deliver a stellar performance. And they did not disappoint. The song filled the Market Hall with the joyous sound of children’s voices, radiating happiness and confidence. As their conductor, it was a sheer delight to witness so many smiling faces, performing with intent and purpose while keeping an eye on my direction and, most importantly, having fun.

This year’s Year 6 cohort has been an absolute joy to teach. Through the diverse music program they experienced, each child found something they loved and could explore further. More importantly, even when they faced challenging concepts and pieces, they applied themselves with the confidence built from skills learned in previous years.

For me, this event will forever be etched in my memory. I am certain the children feel the same way. Their performance was a testament to their growth, joy, and the unbreakable spirit they have shown throughout the year.
