A Harmonious Future: Insights from Our Academy Music Council

At Mayflower Community Academy, we're committed to nurturing the musical talents and interests of our students. To ensure our music curriculum is as engaging and diverse as possible, we recently convened a meeting with our Academy Music Council. This group of passionate students has been selected to help shape the future of our musical learning.

Here's what we discovered:

1. Student Interests and Preferences

The council members enthusiastically shared their favorite types of music. From rock and musicals to pop and acoustic folk, the students have a wide range of musical tastes. They expressed a particular fondness for uptempo and film music, with many enjoying the lively rhythms and emotional depth these genres offer.

When it comes to playing instruments, the students showcased a variety of interests. Violin, electric guitar, glockenspiel, drums, steel drum, piano, guitar, trombone, and saxophone were all mentioned. Many are eager to learn new instruments and develop their skills further.

2. Inclusivity and Diversity

Our students are curious about music from different cultures. They expressed a desire to explore Asian, Gaelic, rap, European, local musicians, Indian, West African, Caribbean, and Eastern European music. They suggested comparing music across continents to deepen their understanding and appreciation of diverse musical traditions.

3. Skill Development

Next year, the students are keen to learn and improve various musical skills, including vocal projection, playing a wide array of instruments, theory and notation, singing, songwriting, controlling volume, and pitch accuracy. They also expressed interest in learning contemporary rock instruments.

4. Technology Integration

The children expressed a keen interest in using recording techniques at a professional studio as well as utilising apps and computer programs to record their own music. Our upper Key Stage Two children particularly enjoyed using software such as BandLab to develop their skills as digital composers. They are excited about incorporating these digital tools into their music classes to enhance their learning and creativity.

5. Performance Opportunities

Our students are eager to participate in a variety of performances, including choir, Earlybirds, teaming up with dance groups, theatre, and collaborations with other schools. They also expressed interest in reggae, guitar workshops, and performances at venues away from school and local sporting events. However, they would like for there to be more opportunities for class performances within the school. The students suggested that this could take place during our weekly singing assemblies.

6. Collaboration and Teamwork

The council members had mixed feelings about working on music projects with classmates, with their enjoyment depending on the specific project. They suggested more group music activities to foster collaboration and teamwork.

7. Building More Engagement

To make music learning more fun and effective, the students recommended that teachers incorporate more pieces composed by our music teachers, music games, and increase time with musical instruments. They also suggested allowing students to choose their own songs, incorporating more movement, listening exercises, and focusing on deeper singing development. Additionally, the children expressed a strong interest in working on projects with other schools and outside agencies.

8. Facilities and Resources

Students expressed a desire for more musical instruments and resources at school. They also shared their thoughts on the current practice rooms and music facilities, seeking improvements to better support their learning. Additionally, the children expressed a strong interest in building a school recording studio that could be used for multiple purposes, including recording music, podcasts, radio station broadcasts, and poetry performances. This facility would greatly enhance the practical learning experience and provide a platform for students to showcase their talents.

9. Parental and Community Involvement

The students are proud of the links the school and children's choir have with local choirs and have enjoyed performing alongside them and learning from them. They expressed an interest in inviting families and experts into school regularly to watch class performances and to team up for more events. The students proposed performances by different classes and events at care homes, local events and other schools to increase community engagement. They believe that fundraising and more parental involvement could significantly enhance our music program.

The insights from our Music Council are invaluable as we strive to make our music program more inclusive, diverse, and engaging. We are excited to implement these ideas and look forward to seeing our students thrive musically at Mayflower Community Academy. Together we can... create a harmonious future filled with creativity and joy.
