Azza Art
It was back in July 2022 when I stumbled upon a talented Plymouth based Artist called Azza. She had an online gallery called Azza's Gallery and her energy resonated with us all.
Azza was schooled at Plymouth College. Her social media profile focused on community and colour. Her online gallery clearly complented our conversations with community around the subject of diversity.
We reached out and over a few chats during the Summer holidays and a plan was hatched to build a mural. The mural would be inspired by Azza's giant sized colour fest which was displayed in Union Street Plymouth.
Azza accompanied our pupils, staff and parents during Plymouth's Black History events. Working alongside Diversity Business Incubator (DBI) Plymouth, Azza and staff linked on cultural celebrations as well as educational events and community festivals.
The backdrop was set. Azza came to meet Mayflower's Art Club pupils. She inspired them with her love and use of colour. She discussed her cultural heritage and her journey from Plymouth schooling to University in Dubai and back.
Pupils worked with Azza, over many weeks, to design and paint a giant size mural. Every pupil in our school took part at some point and in some way.
Then Parent Governor, Rachele Greco, and Art Club Teacher, Georgia Bailey, co-ordinated the events and ensured that all pupils, parents and staff were able to get involved.
"Azza is a young and talented artist who inspires us all with her infectious energy and commitment to community."
Azza will stay close to Mayflower. After sharing prints of her work, she will now work as a friend of our school, joining us for art projects and advising on our cultural and community events. We say a big thank you to Azza the Artist.
