Community Christmas Cakes

A cake for every family

Cooking sits at the heart of so much of what Mayflower does. Not only do we value the opportunity to learn new recipes, but also the chance to come together and share in the act of cooking as a team. Many years ago, a few members of staff and community chatted ideas over coffee. They came up with a plan to make a Christmas Cake. This plan was after months of us running family stay and bake sessions. Our comminuty kitchen was full every week with new meal plans being produced and qualifications being gained in areas such as food hygiene. Coming together over Christmas to bake a cake seemed a natural next step.

Before long, the cake making moved on from being just a few staff and parents to an entire room full of families. Pupils, staff, parents and even families from outside Mayflower came together to take the idea to its next level. They set out to make every family a Chritsmas Cake.

The origional Christmas Cake idea is now become a Mayflower tradition. Learning how to bake a cake, socialising as a family, singing Christmas songs and suporting each other to create festive memories is something that families now look forward too each year.  The next step is to link with partners from outside Mayflower to educate families how to plan, prepare and cook a traditional Christmas dinner. An idea to make one cake has transformed into something that now brings a better Christmas to so many. This idea has helped us to build and deepen many new relationships. An idea that was shared over a coffee. Powerful stuff!

If you would like to sponsor or link on this idea, we would dearly love to go bigger and support even more families. Link with us here.
