Child Protection and Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, but to ensure we all work to an effective system, staff are organised into teams of responsibility. See a plan of this below. Mayflower has clear procedures and systems for identifying, recording, reporting, and reviewing safeguarding and child protection concerns.

We all have a responsibility to follow Academy Policy and report any safeguarding (including child protection) concerns that we may have. If you have any safeguarding concerns, please log your concerns, and report it immediately to one of the most senior qualified members of staff available above. If the concern is regarding the most senior staff, please report to the Lead Designated Governor.

Our school procedures for safeguarding children are in line with Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board (PSCB) Multi Agency Child Protection Procedures www.swcpp.org.uk

National Helplines

Plymouth is the first city in the country to get a dedicated NSPCC Helpline which gives people an alternative point of contact to talk about the welfare of a child.The ground-breaking project is being trialled to provide more localised support and advice for families in need.

The new helpline will serve as an alternative contact to Plymouth City Council, the Police and Health agencies.

NSPCC Helpline counsellors will be on hand 24/7 offering an independent first line of contact for those who may otherwise be unsure where to turn or reluctant to go down an initial legal route.

Any adult worried about the welfare of a child can call the NSPCC’s Helpline on 0808 800 5000, text 88858, email help@nspcc.org.uk

You can contact dedicated helplines to get advice and support on sex and relationships education, abuse in education, FGM, footballers who have been sexually abused, gangs, radicalisation and whistleblowing. For more general concerns about a child’s safety or wellbeing, call the Helpline on 0808 800 5000, email help@nspcc.org.uk or submit our online form. The NSPCC also has advice about spotting the signs of abuse.

Prevent Duty | What is Prevent?

Prevent is the Government’s strategy to address terrorism. The main aim of Prevent is to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. Prevent focusses on all forms of terrorist threats. e.g. international terrorism, far right extremists. The Government’s Prevent strategy can be found at the following address: www.homeoffice.gov.uk

How does the Prevent strategy apply to schools?

From July 2015 all schools (as well as other organisations) have a duty to safeguard children from radicalisation and extremism. This means we have a responsibility to protect children from extremist and violent views. Importantly, we can provide a safe place for pupils to discuss these issues so they better understand how to protect themselves.

Three key themes

Local Authorities, The police and our partner organisations are working together to help strengthen and empower our communities to reject those who want to cause harm. We work together and focus on three key themes:

Safeguarding vulnerable individuals through the provision of advice and support and intervention projects. Working closely with institutions such as universities, schools, prisons, charities and faith establishments.
Challenging terrorist ideology by working closely with other local and national agencies, partners and our communities
The Prevent Engagement Team are a team of officers and police staff aiming to encourage discussion ensuring that terrorism is prevented from taking root in our communities. They support the wider engagement activities already taking place in schools, places of worship and community groups.

Through this work they aim to strengthen communities in order to challenge the ideologies and messages of hate which lead to terrorism.

How you can help

It is important that we all work together, so that we can protect our communities. There are many ways you can help:

Get in touch with your local neighbourhood or Prevent team for advice and support, if you are worried about someone you know who you believe may be vulnerable to radicalisation
You can speak to your local officers or Prevent contact about helping run community events to bring people from different communities together
You can provide facilities that could help us and our partners hold community engagement events.
